 The Purpose of Worship
Drawing from Wittgenstein, acts of spiritual worship are comparable to kissing the photograph of a loved one, which does not effect the individual but satisfies our own expressive needs. We do not worship to encourage an unsure God. What does this say about our need to draw close to God, as this is therefore the primary reason for worship? Is it simply out of a necessity to identify with a transcendent Other within whom our actions will eternally resonate?
It seems more accurate to view worship as a transformational experience which impacts and connects the hearts of those participating. When viewed this way, it can again be interpreted as a self-reflexive action (the other rather than the Other), except that this formation is directed toward community transformation. Whether individually or communally focused, the question is- how do these functionally connect with God? Or is it simply that God is found in the actions themselves?
